Nejatie, Sajjad

Sajjad Nejatie is Assistant Professor of History at the University of British Columbia Okanagan where he teaches courses related to the history of Islam in Asia. He received his MA (2010) and PhD (2017) from the University of Toronto where he specialized in the history and historiography of the Persianate world, particularly early modern Iran, Afghanistan, and South Asia. Nejatie’s current research focuses on the process of empire- and state-building in the eastern Islamicate world, how the activities and ideologies of early modern polities in this region are commemorated in historiography, and the ways in which pre-modern histories are re-imagined and re-presented in modern nationalist discourses. His publications include “Iranian Migrations in the Durrani Empire, 1747–93” (2017); “Reflections on the Prehistory of the Abdali Afghans” (2019); and “Proto-Nationalism in Early Modern Iran and Afghanistan” (2022).
