The dissertation focuses on an early Zoroastrian school of philosophy centred on the Middle Persian work Dēnkard, and the dissertation aims at being the school’s first exposition in both historical and philosophical terms. The school flourished in the early Islamic period before the philosophical dominance of Ibn Sina, and the dissertation tries to show that these Zoroastrians were thinking in a unique way by drawing on Greek and Indian philosophy to formulate their theories in the same milieu as Islamic speculative theology and the burgeoning falsafa tradition. In contrast to their contemporaries, the Zoroastrians defended a theory of dualism, using Light and Dark in a way anticipating the later Persian thinker Suhrawardī.
