The focus of the course this term is the work of the writer Jalal Al-e Ahmad (b. 1923 d. 1969). His literature will be discussed in terms of 1) the period in which it was written and 2) the social, political, and cultural issues it raises.

In our November classes, we discussed short stories by the Iranian women writers: Nahid Rachlin: Mehri Yalfani: Shahrnush Parsipur and Farahnaz Abbasi.  We will continue to discuss the short story by women, by examining the short stories of the ‘founder’ of the ‘female’ short story, Simin Daneshvar (b. 1921). Following the discussion of Daneshvar’s stories, we will consult stories by newer writers.
