Bio:
Gita Hashemi has been working for over three decades in visual and performance art, digital and net art, and language-based art including live embodied writing, as well as in curation and publishing. Her multi-platform and transdisciplinary projects focus on marginalized narratives and their influence in contemporary contexts. She has received numerous project grants from Canadian arts councils, and won awards from Toronto Community Foundation, Baddeck International New Media Festival, American Ad Federation, and Ontario Association of Art Galleries among others. Hashemi is an Ontario Heritage Trust’s Doris McCarthy Artist in Residence in 2021, and her project Rumi Roaming will be staged as part of 2022 Nuit Blanche in Toronto. Hashemi taught visual and digital arts and cultural studies at York University and University of Toronto until 2009.
Abstract:
Blurring the boundaries of artistic practices through constant experimentation, Toronto-based Gita Hashemi works in installation, performance, video, internet art and image-text, as well as curating and writing about culture and art. Hashemi’s work is centered on marginalized histories and contemporary politics, often with an eye on women’s experience.
