Abstract:

As many of you are well aware, countless everyday Iranians are currently fighting desperately for their basic human rights in their home country. Since Mahsa Amini’s death at the hands of the morality police on September 16, 2022, events have rapidly developed into what may be the beginnings of a new revolution, popularized by the chant, “Zhen, Zhian, Azadi ” (or Women, Life, Liberty).
In solidarity with this movement, we, the students of Iranian Studies within the Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations Department at University of Toronto, are hosting our first public presentation on this topic. Our aim is to provide a platform in the hopes of circulating information concerning recent events in Iran. Overall, we wish to pay our respect to the many brave Iranians whose voices deserve to be heard and who have lost their lives by speaking out on behalf of the people of Iran.
